With over 60,000 candles distributed, our mission is to ensure that this beautiful mitzvah is accessible to all Jewish women. Our ability to continue this mission is thanks to the the generosity of a visionary businessman. Although he chose to remain anonymous, he was inspired by the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, who emphasized the pivotal role of women in bringing about redemption. Through his 'spiritual' investments, we continue to spread the light of Shabbat. Through our efforts, thousands of Jewish souls have been touched by the warm glow of our candles every Friday night. We are committed to continuing our work of illuminating the world until the day when we all merit the ultimate redemption—may it come swiftly in our time.
In 1974, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, launched a heartfelt campaign. He encouraged every Jewish woman, no matter where they came from or what they believed, to light Shabbat candles. He called this campaign "Neshek," deriving from the Hebrew acronym for "Neirot Shabbat Kodesh," meaning holy Shabbat candles. Additionally, "Neshek" carries the connotation of "weapon" in Hebrew. The Rebbe exclaimed, "The light emanating from candles lit by Jewish women and girls serves as our ammunition in the ongoing battle against impurity and darkness." With deep passion, he shared the profound blessings held within this simple yet meaningful act. The Rebbe explained that in a world often clouded by confusion and uncertainty, Shabbat candles add light. They hold an incredible power to bring peace and blessings into every Jewish woman's personal life, her home, and the world at large.
Shabbat candles are recognized as a mitzvah primarily designated for women to observe. Lighting candles is entrusted to the women of the household, reflecting their pivotal role in shaping the spiritual atmosphere of the Jewish home. Similarly, he asserts that it will be through the actions of women that we will ultimately transcend our current state of exile and welcome the Messiah. By lighting the Shabbat candles, women are channeling the light of G-d into the world and bringing us READ LESSr to the final redemption.
